JB Log Homes - Why We Chose Kuhns Bros.

We looked at numerous companies and finally realized that we were comparing everything to Kuhns Bros. We were planning on building a majority of the home ourselves so we were very careful in the selection process. Some of the choices that became important to us are as follows.

Kiln Drying - We really had a problem with a log wall shrinking sometimes 3-5 inches in an 8 foot wall. We found that Kuhns Bros. logs were preshrunk and did not need to be built to allow for shrinking. Items such as cabinets could be installed directly on to the logs without any special modifications. Kuhns Bros kiln drying also kills any insects and crystallizes the sap to 170 degrees. Look at a companies building process, if they have to allow for settling, they may not be a True Kiln Dried Log Home Manufacturer.

Ease of Building – Logs from Kuhns Bros. are ready to stack when they arrive. Labor is saved by logs being already cut to length. The logs are predrilled to accept the lag bolts that are used to hold the logs together. Kuhns Bros. provides easy to read blue prints, a construction manual, and hands on experience at a construction workshop. Logs are also inversed stacked to save time from having to sort through bundles to find the right log for the right spot.

Efficiency – We were concerned with air filtration from logs settling. We found that Kuhns Bros. homes are extremely air tight. The exterior window trim is actually recessed into the log and sealed with caulking. Between the log courses is a strong butyl seal between the tongue and groove of the milled logs. Our research proved beneficial as our heating/cooling cost are less than a standard stick built house with similar square feet but significantly less cubic feet of conditioned air.

Maintenance – With our busy lives, we were concerned with maintenance and up keep. As the logs are preshrunk, there is no need to lower interior walls or beams to accommodate the shrinking logs. There is no need to adjust window trim or cabinets as they are fastened directly to the logs as the logs are preshrunk. There is only minimal caulking to the outside so there is very little that needs to be touched up every few years. Basically we have found that about one good weekend every few years is all that it will take to stain and maintain the inside and outside of our log home. Another funny thing that intrigued us was the “D” shape profile. We noticed in some other shaped log homes that the top portion of the round interior log acted as a shelf to collect dust. (We can not imagine having to keep up with dusting every log every few weeks!)
